Beckett Evans' Internship

Zoey never really dealt with an intern before, but now that she had worked at the Prophet for a good few years, it guess it came with the responsibility of being one of the writers that has been at the Prophet the longest. Zoey hadn't planned what she was going to show the boy, or what she was going to have him do. The young woman worked better when she trusted her impulsive nature, when put on the spot she always knew what to do or to say. That morning, she sat down behind her desk, going over her planning for the remainder of the week as she waited for one of the staff members to lead the student her way once he arrived.

Being moved to another person in charge of his internship was ... nerve-wracking. Beckett was the kind of person who lands on his feet but it takes him a while to recognize the terrain and in this case, he had a paper that told him the name of his new "boss". After being guided to said person's desk, Beckett took a deep breath and approached. He was wearing his robes, properly identifying him as a Hogwarts Student. He had interest in Journalism, he did. So this was something he was excited about.

 

He stood in front of the woman's desk, looking as perky and nervous as a perky squirrel. He cleared his throat, "Good morning! My name is Beckett Evans, I am a student from Hogwarts School? I am here for my internship?" he said, memorizing everything about this reporter: her eyes, her face, her handwriting ...

Zoey looked up when the boy's voice filled the room, showing her a friendly smile. "Beckett, please take a seat." She said and gestured to one of the seats. "Can you tell me what got you into journalism? And what branch of journalism you're interested in?" Zoey was in entertainment, which was quite different than news reporting. News reporting revolved around fact based objective story setting, whereas in her playing field, it was important to get express her opinion on things, like outfits, rumours and pieces of art like paintings, plays and music.

There come moments in your life when you face a split road. You can either be honest or say what the other person wants to hear. Beckett wasn't that much interested in the journalistic reporting part of the gig - he was interested in the writing part. He knew that a lot of published writers had gotten their starts within the journalism world and he wanted to dip his toe into that water. However, out of all the internships offered, this one was the most appealing to him and being in the Yearbook Committee had given him a little bit of the notions of how a (school) paper worked, so this seemed like the obvious choice. 

 

... plus he had already dipped his toes into Quidditch and Healing... so... 

 

He took a seat and made direct eye contact as she spoke. She had nice hair, and she was quite pretty. She spoke fast and her voice was quite nice to hear. "I... I want to know more about it in order to make up my mind if I want it to be my future, you know? I feel interested in the ins-and-outs of the news business, but to be honest I am more into the writing part of it; the editing, the topic picking, the ways your words can impact people, investigative journalism... all that is something I feel I am very interested and curious about," he nodded and smiled. "I was in charge of the family newspaper for a few years, so I guess my curiosity started early," he chuckled, remembering the days.

Zoey nodded when the boy told her he wasn't sure what side of journalism he wanted to specialise in just yet. "That's alright. There's plenty of time for you to delve into your interests before your graduation." Zoey said before she got up, grabbing her bag. "Do you have any questions before we go? And I assume you've brought a change of clothes?"

Beckett smiled and nodded. He had plenty of time, and he really didn't have to decide right away as soon as he graduated, right? He didn't want to make a harsh desicion and ruin his life in a job he didn't like. He did not want a ministry job, he did not want to be a quidditch player.. there had to be more out there!

 

Miss McLaggen got up and grabbed her bag, making Beckett blink a couple of times. Change of clothes? He tilted his head. "No.. .no one told me exactly I had to bring that," he said with an apologetic expression. "I brought my notepad, my refillable quill and the key back to the castle, that's about it," he shrugged. Were they going to go on assignment now?! Cool! Adventure! His face started to light up as an idea started to brew "Maybe.. maybe I could not use the robe.. I could ... I could leave the jumper and the tie and just use my undershirt and pants?" he grinned, the offering sounding logical in his head.

Zoey showed the young boy a soft smile. “An important part of journalism is getting people to talk to you. There’s many ways to go about it, but in general, people won’t open up to someone in school robes that easily.” It were just the facts. Adults thought they knew more than kids and didn’t like to spend their time talking to kids who ask too many questions. “No worries. Just keep it in mind for next time.” She said, eager for them to get started. Her louboutins clinked against the floor as she walked over to the exit of the prophet headquarters, leading him towards their destination. “Any questions while we’re on our way?”

Beckett started to write things down as she spoke. "Getting people to talk to you. School robes are bad. Got it!" he smiled proud of himself as he walked fast, almost keeping up with her. He managed to take his robe off and made a ball from it and shoved it into his backpack as he walked, looking up ahead to where he was going and then to her. "Ummm no questions..." he said as he tried to get his head to stop racing. "Ummm maybe to where is it that we're going?" he smiled innocently. "Are we going to interview someone famous?" he asked. She was in charge of entertainment, right? So that probably meant that they were going to go to interview someone like... celebrity status like a movie star or someone!

Zoey looked behind her and raised a single eyebrow when the boy mentioned he didn't have questions for her. "As a journalist you always have questions. Even if you don't. There's always something you can find out if you just let people talk." Zoey said and turned left into an alleyway. She let out a soft chuckle when the boy assumed they were just on their way to meet a celebrity like it was nothing. "Not quite, we're going to a gallery." Zoey said. A new show just opened there, and with nothing more exciting to write about, it was what was on their schedule today. The paper needed filling up, it wasn't the most exciting, but a good journalist would be able to write about things like that as well.

Beckett frowned. No, he didn't have questions about their activity, so why the big deal. He shrugged it off and took note of that comment. Always have questions, he told himself.  She mentioned they were going to a gallery and Beckett perked up. This was going somewhere!  "And what are we going to do there?" he asked, his natural curiosity peeking now. "What kind of gallery? Is it a photography one? Art? An exhibit? Who is going to be there? Are we going to go through the press side or are we there as guests? Ooooh! Is it going to be a high-elite member kind of thing? I hear they have weird artifacts they always like to exhibit... is it for charity?" he asked as they kept going, oblivious at the fact that this was a filler job. To him it was a first time they were going on assignment, so to him he was already being a reporter.

Zoey smirked when the boy started asking a bunch of questions just after she told him to always have questions. But just because he had questions, that didn't mean Zoey was going to give him all the answers he was looking for that easily. "The new art show opened today. We'll be there at the opening with invited guests and other press." Zoey gave him a tip of the iceberg. "I've done my research, I know what message the artist had in mind, but I want you to go in blind, to give your unbiased, unfiltered opinion. Just let it hit you in the moment."

Beckett nodded. Oaky, so it was going to be an art exhibition and they were there as "members of the press". It still left Beckett with a bunch of questions, mostly about what sort of art exhibition it was -- because he loved photography and painting. Sculpting and this new-modern art tendency? Not so much. And if you are going to evaluate art, it's also very subjective to what you like or don't like, isn't it? He had a lot of questions... but he decided to keep them to himself as they walked.

 

He took off his robe and placed it inside his bag, which had an expansion/extension charm in it. Also, he took off his tie and loosened his shirt's neck. Finally, he took out his bottle with cool water, drinking from it as they kept on going. "Is it a friend of yours, the artist?" he asked, wondering if this was a filler article, if the artist had connections to the paper or if they had paid good gold to be included in the printed press.

Summer Jobs RPC: Coffee break

The Daily Prophet is as busy as he expected. Although his superiors assured him that it’s not anything remotely close to busy in their busiest days. It’s summer, and so there are many works who took their vacation and there’s really not much going on when people are mostly away for traveling. He wasn’t sure what he’s expecting but it’s definitely enlightening. Niccolo’s wearing clothes appropriate for an internship. It’s nothing fancy, but at least it looks presentable, he thought. He’s currently in the back of the writing room, where there’s some sort of a small lounge where they can take a break from all those stuff. Not that Niccolo is super busy at the moment. He’s been introduced to several photojournalists and he told them that he wanted to be one when he graduates, preferably focusing on travel features or something. This morning, he was with the senior photojournalist, tailing him and observing the work that he does. He was told that being one does not mean taking pictures all the time. He also needs to be good at writing stuff because pictures don’t have enough impact without the words accompanying them. Sitting there, Niccolo removed his jacket, leaving his navy shirt on, and hang it on the back of his seat, staring outside the window as he sipped the coffee he found at the staff room.

Jasmine was still over the moon that she'd managed to score this internship in the end. After speaking with Goldie, she'd really been betting on being assigned here amid all her choices. She was sure Eunoia was a lovely place, but the girl wanted to get her feet wet. Dive into the world of journalism to see if this was truly something she could picture herself doing professionally. the first few days had consisted of a lot of running around, being shown the different areas and talking to a bajillion different people whose names she absolutely did not have memorized. But things found their stride after that, as she was left to her assignments. To kick her off, she'd been given some rough drafts of articles to expand, so she'd spent a deal of her morning doing research about some of the national Quidditch teams to flesh this one article out to a full page. She'd been told she could pitch her own stories too, so she was keeping a sharp eye out at camp for anything that might be worth writing about. Looking up from her desk, she noted the time. "Break time." Parchments in hand, she reviewed them as she walked, revising through bullet point after bullet point of factoids about different players, all scrawled in her slanted handwriting. She flipped to the second parchment as she walked through the doorway. Three wins... Used to play for the Bats... She looked up from her notes to find that she wasn't alone. "Oh hey." Sitting opposite Niccolo, she rolled her parchments back up and set them in her lap. "How's your morning going so far?"

He has some work to do but his internship, he hoped, would mostly be about how to take proper pictures. What’s the best angle to use so they could effectively show what they’re trying to convey to people? He knew how to use a camera. He’d read books about lighting and other stuff related to it but then, Niccolo is not naive to think that it’s all there is to it. He knew some other stuff is involved and that’s what he’s here for. He also does not doubt writing news will be part of the training and that’s something he’s not looking forward to. Niccolo dislikes writing stories although maybe Jasmine could help him with that. Speaking of Jasmine... they both got in and he saw her around the building and they sometimes eat lunch together and hang out during their breaks but most often than not, they’re pretty bus with their own stuff. He sort of missed her, he got so used to seeing her multiple hours of everyday so the change is quite unwelcome. Still, it’s for their future so it’s acceptable. The young Wormald sighed, his mind flying to dangerous territory yet again everytime he thought of the girl. How can one summer change almost everything? Taking another sip of his coffee, he was mulling over the question when the said girl appeared in front of him, as if his mind somehow conjured her because he wanted to see her. Good god, seriously! He gotta stop all these thoughts about her! It’s getting out of hand. ”Hey, you.” He greeted with a soft smile. Niccolo couldn’t help it, the smile automatically lights up his face everytime she’s around. ”It was slow. My superiors had to go somewhere and I was left alone to do some slight work.” His smile turned mischievous as he put his mug on the table. Niccolo leaned forward and whispered. ”I’m being a lazybum.” It’s not like he didn’t do work at all but he was rather slow, you know? He’s not taking everything too seriously just yet, but he’s serious enough. ”What about you? You look busy...” He pointed at those parchments on her lap. ”You want to drink or eat something?”

Jasmine didn't mind being kept busy, especially in this type of scenario. It made her feel productive, and put those incessantly whirring thoughts of hers to use. She didn't know most of the interns very well, so although she saw them around from time to time, they didn't speak all that often. Maybe that would change as the internship progressed. She did know one, though. The best one of them all, all biases included. She and Niccolo didn't cross paths as often as she'd have liked, but she knew he was probably enjoying getting to dive deeper into the world of photography over on his side of the office. She appreciated whenever they got to meet up on breaks, and today would be no exception. Apparently his morning today had been slow, which wasn't quite her experience. "Some slight work? What're you working on now?" The boy admitted he was currently just being a little lazy by taking it easy, and Jasmine grinned. "Mm, nothing new there," she shot back teasingly, bumping his foot with her own beneath the table. As for her own morning... "It's been hectic to say the least. I have to get this Quidditch article done by the end of the day. I spent most of my morning doing research, so I figure if I can start this before lunch, I should be able to hand it in on time," she told him, glancing at her parchments. "What're you drinking; coffee? I could really go for some food, though." She'd been sipping her water all morning, so she wasn't parched, but her stomach had lain empty since breakfast.

Niccolo and Jasmine haven’t spent much time together while in the Daily Prophet HQ but that’s just expected, since they’ve got their own work to take care of. They try to when they have free time, of course, but it’s bo as often as he would’ve liked. ”I was organizing some articles featured in their travel section a couple years ago. I have to sort them by continent and then I have to write my own article about them; some sort of summary, if you will. I can choose to put pictures in it, one of my own, of course.” He took another sip of the coffee. ”I was hoping to tag along at some point. I wanna see them in action.” Falling into the familiar rhythm of their friendly banter, Niccolo bumped her back. ”Don’t tell anyone, okay? It’s our secret.” He added teasingly. Niccolo can be a lazybum, but he knew responsibility, too. His parents instilled that in him especially when Sandreia was born. No matter how much they antagonize each other, he’s still her older brother. He listened to her speak about what she’s saying about writing a quidditch article, nodding his head. ”I know you. You must have read loads of stuff already and you already have an idea on how to start your article. It’s just a matter of properly putting them together and exploring it.” He looked down at the liquid inside the cup and smiled, looking back up at her. ”Decaf. I don’t want to palpitate.” Figured, she hasn’t eaten anything yet and Niccolo sighed, rising to his feet. The girl doesn’t know how to take care of herself sometimes! ”I’ll bring you some sandwich and juice.” Without really waiting for her reply, he went straight to the break room and grabbed the food he saw there. In a few minutes, he was back, the plate and bottles juice in front of Jasmine. ”Eat.” Niccolo playfully pinched her nose then went back to his seat, grabbing his mug again. ”You going home directly after work?”

Niccolo explained that he'd been doing work for the travel section, and that honestly sounded like a dream, even if it was just organizing and summarizing up articles. She had no issues with her own assignment, but between Quidditch and travel, it was obvious which subject interested her more. She already knew a good bit about Quidditch thanks to her father, which gave her a bit of an up on this assignment, but she still had to do a lot of research to compensate for what she didn't know. She didn't keep up to date with the player gossip, and what trades were happening, as well as the game-by-game scores. She was mostly only ever aware of Puddlemere at all times, and then whichever teams were competing for the World Cup. "Your own pictures? Has your family traveled around much since getting your camera?" She knew he'd been around the world at summer camp before, but that was prior to getting that camera of his for being a prefect. "Or were you thinking more along the lines of using the ones from the zoo?" Animal pictures would be easy enough to insert. He definitely had plenty of koalas, if he happened to want to focus on Australia. Jasmine didn't actually believe Niccolo was being lazy. The boy had earned those grades of his fair and square, and he'd clearly put a good amount of effort into his application here. He wasn't about to blow off this opportunity to simply lounge around. But Jasmine zipped her fingers across her lips. "Your secret's safe with me." He needn't ever worry about that. No sooner had she mentioned food than Niccolo was up and out the door. "Thank you!" she called after him. He clearly wasn't lazy when it came to fetching her sustenance. Or truly anything concerning a request of hers. Not that she'd asked him to go get her food. But food was what she desired, and food was what she'd received, apparently. The boy returned a few moments later, supplying her with a sandwich and juice, as promised. "Aye aye, captain," she replied before scrunching her nose at his pinch. Picking up her sandwich, she noted it was chicken salad, but held off on taking a bite in order to answer his question first. "Probably. You?" Taking a bite, her stomach thanked her with a happy little gurgle.

”I wanted to use my own pictures but you raised a good question there. We didn’t travel much in the past year. My Mom was busy at work, then she got pregnant and we can’t travel now.” His Dad said that his Mom’s pregnancy is rather delicate so they need to be very careful with where they go. Last time when she got pregnant with Soph, she had to go on bed rest and he was hoping it would go smoother this time. ”I can use the zoo pictures but I’m not sure if they’ll be applicable. We’ll see. I’ll come up with something.” Niccolo threw her a wink and took another sip. ”Tell me more about what you’re reading. Is there anything I can do to help? I’m a big fan of quidditch so maybe you can pick my brain?” Niccolo wanted to know more about her stuff. It’s more interesting than his own, for sure. Besides, if he could help make her life easier, he would do it. I mean, she’s still going to do the hard part and he’ll just contribute by exploring the ideas she already has in mind. As for his own work... It’s definitely a dream come true for him but again, he’s just starting and he still has loads of things to learn. He’s barely dipped his toes, so to speak, but he knew everything will work out just fine. He was out the door to grab her food and he was back in mere seconds. Sometimes, Jasmine gets so focused on her work that she forgets to eat and take care of herself. It’s not an attack or anything. In fact, it’s a testament to her character and he admires her for that. ”No, not yet.” He shook his head in response, resting his cheek on his palm as he watched her eat. ”I’m dropping by the ice cream shop then go straight to the roof of this abandoned building I found nearby and watch the sunset from up there.” Since they’re working in the Daily Prophet, Jasmine is definitely a closer to home. As for Niccolo, he’s living with Lee for the meantime until his internship is finished. It works for him because the house is very close, he doesn’t need to wake up too early. Plus, the stores around him within reach? Hell, yes!
