All-

I will be posting the rule book in this forum at midnight tonight. I enthusiastically invite ALL members to post their comments and suggestions in this forum once the rule book is up.

I will be taking ALL suggestions into consideration before finalizing the rule book, but some aspects of the rule book, as Im sure you all understand, are already permanent for continuity sake.

I also invite all other schools and facets of the site to adopt or adapt the rule book. Happy to work with any school that wants to start Quidditch!

Yours,
Gladice

JK I finished it early so it's up now. lol

The Quidditch Rule Book

I. Teams

  • Each team must consist of at least seven players and any number of additional alternate players.
    • A Keeper
    • A Seeker
    • 3 Chasers
    • 2 Beaters
  • Each team must select a Captain or Co-Captains to serve as coordinator of House Quidditch activities and liaison to the Head Referee.
  • A full roster is required at every Quidditch match.

II. OOC Gameplay

  • All Quidditch matches will be played out in a public chat room as designated by the Head Referee.
  • Each team must submit a list of at least 50 Harry Potter Universe or HO trivia questions with answers one week in advance of every game. (This can include ANY canon information including Pottermore, Fantastic Beasts, and tweets of Rowling herself.)
  • The Quaffle & Chasers & Keeper
    • At the beginning of the match, the Head Referee will release the Quaffle by asking a neutral trivia question, followed by a 10-second countdown. The first Chaser to answer correctly will have possession of the Quaffle.
    • Once a Chaser has possession of the Quaffle they must designate a teammate (another Chaser) to pass to. The Referee will ask a question from the opposing team, followed by a 10-second count down. If the teammate fails to answer correctly or in the allotted time, they lose possession to the opposing team.
    • A Chaser must pass the Quaffle 3 times before attempting to score.
    • When attempting to score, the Referee will ask a question from the team in possession to the Keeper. If the Keeper fails to answer correctly or in the allotted time, the team in possession scores. If the Keeper answers correctly, they may pass the Quaffle to one of their Chasers.
    • Additionally, after the second question, the Beaters will have the opportunity to knock a bludger at the Chaser in possession.
  • The Bludgers & Beaters
    • After the second pass of the possessing team, the opposing Beaters will have the opportunity to attempt to hit a Bludger at the Chaser.
    • If a Beater chooses to hit a Bludger, the Head Referee will ask a question from the possessing team. If they answer correctly, they successfully hit the Bludger. If they answer incorrectly, they miss and are unable to hit the Bludger again for one round.
    • When a Bludger is knocked at a possessing Chaser, the possessing Beaters have the opportunity to knock the Bludger away by answering a trivia question from the opposing team. Similarly to other positions, if they fail to answer correctly or in the allotted time, the Bludger will make contact and that Chaser will lose possession at which point the Head Referee will ask another question and any Chaser has the opportunity to recover the Quaffle.
  • The Snitch & Seeker
    • Prior to the start of the game, the Head Referee will hide the Snitch on the FIRST PAGE of a forum on the HOGWARTS FORUMS.
    • The Snitch will never be hidden in an OOC or password protected area.
    • The Seekers are the ONLY PLAYERS allowed on the forums during the match and are tasked with scouring the forums for the Snitch.
    • Throughout the match, the Head Referee will release clues for the location of the Snitch at every ten minute interval.
    • The first Seeker to post the link of the Snitch to the chat will capture the Snitch and win 150 points. The game will end
  • Points & Winning
    • The team with the most points when the Snitch is found will win the game. As a reminder, finding the Snitch does NOT guarantee a win, only 150 points.
    • Each score by the Chasers is worth the standard 10 points. It is entirely possible for a team to win without catching the Snitch and has happened in HOs history.

III. The Hogwarts Quidditch Cup

  • Hogwarts Quidditch will operate under a round robin system of play. Each team will meet every other team on the field of battle play.
  • At the end of the tournament cycle, the team with the most wins will be declared the winner of the cup.
    • In the event of a tie in wins, I will subtract wins from losses and that will determine the winner.
    • In the event of further tie, the number of points scored in the game will determine the winner.
    • And God help us, in the event of a further tie, the two tied teams will play another match before the end of term to determine the winner

IV. IC Advantages

  • Each team can gain an advantage by hosting an IN CHARACTER Quidditch Practice at the Quidditch Pitch. For every practice completed before the game, each team will receive 10 additional seconds to answer a trivia question. You can host a maximum of two practices.
  • The only requirement for a practice is that half of your team show up for it and post twice, or all team members show up and post once. When finished, just send me the link to qualify for the advantage.

Ooh, this looks great! I think it's interesting that the referee will be asking the questions (mostly) because in the past it was generally the Beaters who always asked the questions, right? I like it, though.

Also the IC advantages is a fantastic idea!! Love it!

so do the trivia questions have to be a brand new set of at least 50 every time, or could some be reused if they don't get used during the game?

I too really like the idea of the practice advantage, I think that would help keep the team together better than before. I also appreciate the first page rule for the snitch :o

Sequoia- Actually, if you guys would prefer the players ask the questions that is fine with me. I honestly just couldn't remember lol it's been like 10 years since I was Ravenclaw team captain and played Quidditch.

Jamie- Teams can keep the questions or mix them up to keep things fresh, whatever they fancy.

ALSO an important addition, I have decided to purchase an affordable chat system for the site to use for Quidditch. It will be faster than the older chats we used and allow for more functions. If people like the chat I pick, I will fund it in perpetuity for all areas of the site.

I think the ref asking the questions is a good idea because it will make it fairer... when the members ask the questions they can tell their teammates the answer so someone has it typed in and "at the ready" for if its deflected. plus, they can choose to use ridiculously difficult questions and the competition takes on a more aggressive tone (at times).

The handbook sounds really good, and the new IC Advantage is a great idea! I absolutely love it!

Technical questions:

1. about the time for the games. How do you decide it? (we are all from different Time zone... how to be fair?)

2. the ten second reply rule. Is there a countdown?

Thank you!

Anastasia- To your first question, because we are based on EST I used that time zone but if there is a significant disadvantage to using EST I will gladly change the time of a match to make things fair.

Also, yes there will be a count down in the chat itself so I will post:
10
9
8
7
Etc
