Dearest HO members,
For months, I have been keeping this a secret.... well, a secret as best as I could. Working with an amazing group of writers who are now my Heads of House and organizers of the Durmstrang Dark Plot (the Dark Wizards, mind you) we are now proud to unveil the new houses coming to Durmstrang during Spring Term 2017.
Perhaps the changes in the Main Offices will take a little time to come forth. And I know that most of you are scared of this change. However, let me assure you, this desicion was not taken lightly; it has been on the working table for months and now the phoenix is ready to take flight.
DURMSTRANG INSTITUTE HOUSES

HEAD OF HOUSE: PROF. GALATHEA DIVOIRE
Located on the First Floor Tower
The house of immortality, raw energy and war. In Norse mythology, it's the home of God Ullr, where the yew trees grow - home of hunters and cunning spirits. For many centuries, people of northen Europe made bows from the wood of yew trees. This tree is thought to have magical properties; in wandlore Yew wands are among the rarer kinds, and their ideal matches are likewise unusual, and occasionally notorious. The wand of yew is reputed to endow its possessor with the power of life and death, which might, of course, be said of all wands; and yet yew retains a particularly dark and fearsome reputation in the spheres of duelling and all curses. Wands hewn from these most long-lived trees have been found in the possession of heroes quite as often as of villains. Where wizards have been buried with wands of yew, the wand generally sprouts into a tree guarding the dead owner’s grave. What is certain is that the yew wand never chooses either a mediocre or a timid owner.
This house will aim to immortality through glory. It will unleash the apocalyptic war our wizarding society needs so desperately to cleanse itself. It reminds us that through destructions comes renovation; through death comes life. The students who are chosen to be in this house are often extroverts, loving the aspect of a changing life. They are filled with curiosity, energetic, open-minded and philosophical. They are good in dueling and often encounter themselves in mischievous acts of practical jokes, warlike strategy and hunter techniques. Members of Ydalir are not emotional moody people, in fact they can be downright emotionally detached but they do get irritable when they are bored. Ydalir are well adjusted people with no emotional problems holding them back. They just want to explore the world and not fret about emotions and feelings. Others may be hurt by their lack of commitment but they don't care, that's not why they are on this planet, they are here to gain wisdom, learn and explore. They might have problems finishing some projects they started if it takes too long, they want immediate results and will move on to the next project if it takes too long. This is not because of laziness, but this motivation to move on is due to their hatred of boredom. Boredom is their fear and instead of facing it, they will up and leave in search of something more stimulating. They don't dwell on hurt because it is a waste of their energy.

Located on the Fourth Floor Tower
Niflheim means (“Mist home” or “Mist World”) is the darkest and coldest region in the world according to Norse mythology. Niflheim is the first of the nine worlds and Niflheim is placed in the northern region of Ginnungagap. The eldest of the three wells are located in Niflheim which is called Hvergelmir “bubbling boiling spring” and it is protected by the huge dragon called Nidhug (Níðhöggr). It is said that all cold rivers come from the well called Hvergelmir, and it is said to be the source of the eleven rivers in Norse mythology. The well Hvergelmir is the origin of all living and the place where every living being will go back. As the world tree Yggdrasil started to grow, it stretched one of its three large roots far into Niflheim, and drew water from the spring Hvergelmir. This tree is an Ash tree; in wandlore, ash is slightly associated with the Dark Arts, as the ash tree is said to ‘strangle’ the plants around it. It does excel at Dark magic, but is also good for Transfiguration. They also tend to bond to good Diviners. This makes Niflheim the house of knowledge and divine recognition. Wizards from this house are to hold the dark knowledge, and distribute it only to those worthy of it.
Students from Niflheim tend to be rebels just for the sake of having their own way. Their stubbornness sometimes causes their failure, they will continue to do something their way even though others have proved it is wrong, they are very smart people and know it is wrong but they will continue just because it is their way, they are very fixed in opinion and stubborn when confronted. Despite their stubbornness and fixed opinion, they will never impose their ideas on others, they have respect for everybody's differences. They are in search of wisdom, they are very observant and they can gather their information objectively because emotions do not get in the way, they seem to be above emotions altogether and when they speak, they speak the truth. They are visionaries, unconventionality and intellectual independence, the people who deviate from the crowd and go their own way. They are always after intellectual stimulation, constantly discovering something new, forming new opinions and stubbornly traveling their way regardless of what other people think. Niflheim are filled with paradoxes, they are interested in the opposite ends of the spectrum, they like to be alone yet are social butterflies, they like to experience both sides and see both opinions as they formulate new ideas with their forward thinking, active mind.

Located on the Third Floor Tower
Vanaheim is the home of the Vanir Gods. The Vanir Gods is an old branch of Gods. The Vanir are masters of sorcery and magic. They are also widely acknowledged for their talent to predict the future. Nobody knows where exactly the land, Vanaheim is located, or even how it looks like. When the war between the Aesir and the Vanir ended, three of the Vanir came to live in Asgard, Njord and his children Freya and Freyr. The house of experimentation, of riches and praise, the dark souls from this house are the path finders, the responsible for finding new ways for the dark arts, new methodologies and practices. They are chosen to battle with the gods. This house has a ship - Sessrumnir, where first years stay before they move on to the main common room and dormitory as a means to prove their loyalty.
Vanaheim is associated with Oak; known as Wizard Wood, this wood is perhaps the strongest. Draws off the element of fire, as well as lightning. Seeks a powerful companion, a guardian and liberator. Students from this house are very independent but they need something to control and someone to admire them and appreciate them. They are fully capable of being greatly successful on their own but they are much happier if they have an audience and a following of people who look up to them. They would prefer not be alone. They love the new and extraordinary, they despise dull, regular routines and if this is what they are faced with, they will simply create their own drama and excitement. Vanaheim students are extremely sensitive but they hide that very well; they love praise and flattery, their egos demand respect and adoration - they are all about pride. This can cause them to be self-centered. They will never settle for second best. They want only the best which can cause lavish excessive spending habits as they enjoy their life of luxury, which is all to easily justified by the grand and magnificent Vanaheim! Public image is very important to them, with luxurious possessions and ways of life, this keeps the public image in high standing. They will do whatever it takes to protect their own reputation. Vanaheim are very generous, kind and open-hearted people. If they are crossed, they will strike back with force but they are not one to hold a grudge, they easily forgive, forget and move on.
